Getting in, and getting unstuck
Splitmate is a small independent project, so this page is the fast route: the handful of things that actually go wrong, answered properly, and an email address that reaches a person for everything else.
Step one
Getting into the test
- Open the opt-in link on the phone you are going to use it on, in a browser signed in to the same Google account that phone is signed in to.
- Accept the invitation on that page. Play can take a few minutes to catch up.
- Install Splitmate from that same page. There is no public listing, so searching the Play Store will not find it — the opt-in link is the only route in.
- After that it behaves like any other app: Play installs the updates, for as long as the account stays on the tester list.
The list is matched to the account signed in on the device, not to the address you wrote to us from. If the phone is signed in as somebody else — a work profile, an old account, a handset passed down — opting in there puts the wrong one on the list. Google Play also requires 12 testers opted in for 14 days before a closed test can be promoted, which is why there is a list at all.
Contact
Email, and what to put in it
Write to splitmate@quizuncle.com. It goes to a person, not a queue. There is no ticket system, no chatbot and no form on this site — no script on this site talks to anything at all.
A bug report is much easier to act on with four things in it:
- What you tapped, in order, as far back as you can remember.
- What happened instead of what you expected.
- Your Android version — it is under About phone in the system settings.
- Whether the group was syncing at the time. A synced group says so on its own card in the Groups tab, and which of the two it said is very often the whole answer.
One thing to leave out: a group's invite code. The code is the permission — anyone holding it can join that group — so treat it like a door key and do not paste it into an email.
Common situations
When something looks wrong
My friend added an expense and it has not turned up
Both phones need the network for a change to cross between them, and either end can be the one that is missing it. The Groups tab is where to look: a group that is syncing says so on its own card, reading Syncing live when the connection is up and Sync paused (offline) when the phone is holding your changes locally until it is back. Yours can be live while theirs is not, so it is worth checking both. Once both ends are live the expense arrives on its own, and nothing is lost in the meantime — a change made while a phone is offline is kept and sent when it reconnects.
I got a new phone
If you signed in with Google before you left the old phone, install Splitmate on the new one and tap Restore with Google on the welcome screen. Your groups and their chats come back, because those live on the server as well as on the phone. Your personal ledger does not come back, and this is the honest half of the same promise: expenses you logged as Just me never leave the phone, so there was no copy anywhere for a restore to fetch. If you have not signed in with Google yet, do it before you change phones, from Settings.
I was removed from a group
Removal in Splitmate is narrower than the word sounds, and the app says so in its own dialog: you stop appearing in that group’s balances and you stop being included in new splits. That is the whole of it. It does not reach into your phone, so the copy of the group your device already holds stays where it is until you leave the group yourself. If you are the one doing the removing, the same thing applies in reverse: the button takes someone out of the maths, and it does not take back what their device already has.
The settlement settings will not open
That is the lock, and it is deliberate rather than a fault. The settings go read-only for one person at a time, and only when two things are true at once: you owe money in that group, and a trigger is already live, meaning either the deadline has passed or what you owe is over the limit that was set. Both arms lock together, because raising a threshold is exactly as easy as deleting a deadline, and silencing a reminder by editing the trigger away is the loophole the lock exists to close. Settle up, or drop back under the limit, and it is an ordinary editable form again. Everyone else in the group can still edit it while you are locked.

Your data, and what happens to it
Deleting what a group holds about you is a request you send by email, and the page below says exactly what to write and what comes off the server. The privacy page is the long version: what is uploaded, what never is, and the parts we can read.
